The best coffee grinders in Australia

Quick answer: For most home espresso setups the best coffee grinder is the Breville Smart Grinder Pro: 60 settings, a 0.2 second dose timer and cradles for 54 and 58 mm portafilters, $324 at JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and The Good Guys. If you also brew filter coffee, the Baratza Encore ESP ($319 at Harvey Norman) splits its dial between the two. For flat burrs and almost no retention, the Turin DF54 is $399 at Di Pacci.

Price at the retailer named, checked 18 October 2026. Prices change, so the retailer's page is the final word. We can't show Amazon prices here; the Amazon button shows today's price. Paid links: we may earn a commission. The highlighted pick is the one we'd buy for most people.

How we picked: We compared these 8 picks on burrs, settings, loading and price, using maker specs, Australian retailer prices and owner reports. We haven't tested them hands-on yet, and maker claims are labelled as theirs. Commission never changes the order. Full method.

The grinder decides more about your espresso than the machine does. Espresso pushes water through a puck of coffee in about half a minute, so the grind has to be fine, even and adjustable in small steps; a cheap blade grinder cannot do it. Prices below were checked at JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, Kitchen Warehouse, Myer, Appliances Online, Breville and Di Pacci on 18 October 2026; for the grinders also on Amazon Australia, check the current price on Amazon. We compared maker and retailer specifications; we have not run grind-size tests ourselves.

Burrs: type and size

All eight grinders here use burrs, two hardened rings that crush beans to a set gap.

  • Conical burrs (a cone inside a ring) are in the Breville, Baratza, Fellow, De’Longhi and Sunbeam grinders. The Smart Grinder Pro and Encore ESP use 40 mm burrs (Di Pacci and Baratza’s Amazon listing), and the Opus uses a 40 mm six-blade conical set.
  • Flat burrs (two parallel discs) are in the Turin DF54 (54 mm) and Eureka Mignon Specialita (55 mm). They are the usual choice in single-dose espresso grinders.

Bigger burrs grind faster and, all else equal, more evenly, but the motor, the burr alignment and the adjustment mechanism matter as much. Do not read burr shape as a ranking.

Settings: count what falls in the espresso range

A “60 settings” grinder is not automatically finer than a “40 settings” one. Makers spread different ranges across their dials. The Baratza Encore ESP is honest about it: steps 1 to 20 are small steps for espresso, 21 to 40 are big steps for filter. The Smart Grinder Pro and Dose Control Pro have 60 steps from espresso to French press. Stepless grinders (DF54, Mignon Specialita) have no clicks at all, so you can stop anywhere, which helps when you are chasing a shot time. The De’Longhi KG521’s 18 steps and the Sunbeam’s 25 are the coarsest dials here.

Hopper or single dose

A hopper grinder holds a bag’s worth of beans and grinds a dose on demand: the Smart Grinder Pro holds 450 g, the KG521 350 g, the Encore ESP 300 g at JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman. It is fast in the morning, but beans sit in the hopper. A single-dose grinder (Opus, DF54) is loaded with the exact dose you weighed, ground empty each time, and keeps beans sealed in their bag. It suits people who switch beans or weigh every shot. Single-dose makers advertise low retention, the old grounds left inside: Di Pacci quotes under 0.1 g for the DF54, and Fellow says “low” without a number.

The picks

The Breville Smart Grinder Pro is the default for a reason. It has 60 settings, a backlit display, a dose timer you set in 0.2 second steps, and two cradles so it grinds straight into a 54 mm Breville or a 58 mm portafilter. It was $324 at JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and The Good Guys, and Breville gives it a two-year replacement warranty. Di Pacci, which also sells it, notes that a 40 mm conical hopper grinder holds more grounds than a flat-burr single-doser, so it is not the pick if you weigh every shot.

The Baratza Encore ESP is the grinder for a house that drinks espresso and filter. Twenty fine steps for espresso, twenty wide steps for pour-over and plunger, a burr that lifts out without tools, and a dosing cup that fits 54 mm baskets (58 mm with the included adapter). It was $319 at Harvey Norman. It has no timer, so you stop it yourself or weigh. JB Hi-Fi lists a two-year warranty and Harvey Norman 12 months, so confirm with the seller.

The Turin DF54 is the cheapest way into flat burrs and single dosing: 54 mm burrs, a stepless dial, a plasma ioniser against static and a claimed retention under 0.1 g, $399 at Di Pacci. Amazon Australia has a listing for a “DF54” sold by a store called DF64 Coffee with matching specifications, but it does not name the Turin brand. The Fellow Opus is the single-dose conical option at $299.95 at Kitchen Warehouse, with 41+ settings and a two-year limited warranty; Fellow’s own Australian account sells it on Amazon.

The Eureka Mignon Specialita is the upgrade: 55 mm flat burrs, stepless micrometric adjustment, a touchscreen with two programmed doses and a fork that holds the portafilter, $799 at Di Pacci. It makes most sense next to a machine like the Breville Dual Boiler or Lelit Mara X.

On a budget, the Breville Dose Control Pro has the same 60-step range as the Smart Grinder Pro with a simpler one-second timer for $231 at Harvey Norman, and a one-year warranty. The De’Longhi KG521 ($246.95 at Kitchen Warehouse) pairs with the Dedica machines but has only 18 steps. The Sunbeam EM0440 is a burr grinder for $95 at Harvey Norman; paired with a $399 Breville Bambino it makes a $494 setup, covered in the under $500 guide.

Which grinder for which machine

  • Machine with dual-wall (pressurised) baskets, such as the Dedica or Sunbeam Slimline as shipped: any grinder here works, including the $95 Sunbeam.
  • Breville Bambino, Bambino Plus or Dual Boiler: the Smart Grinder Pro or Encore ESP.
  • A 58 mm machine you plan to keep for years: the DF54 or Mignon Specialita.
  • Already own a machine with a built-in grinder, such as the Barista Express: you do not need one yet; see the espresso machine guide.

The one trap

Buying the grinder last and cheapest. Once you move from dual-wall to single-wall baskets, which is where espresso starts to taste of the beans rather than the machine, a grinder with coarse steps cannot get a shot into range. If the budget is tight, spend less on the machine and more on the grinder: the grinder can move to your next machine, and a built-in grinder cannot.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best coffee grinder for espresso in Australia?

For most people, the Breville Smart Grinder Pro at $324: it has enough fine settings for espresso, a dose timer and cradles for both common portafilter sizes. If you want flat burrs and single dosing, the Turin DF54 at $399 is the next step.

Conical or flat burrs: which is better?

Both make good espresso. Conical burrs are cheaper to build and common in hopper grinders; flat burrs are common in single-dose grinders aimed at espresso enthusiasts. Burr size, alignment and how fine the adjustment is matter more than the shape.

Do I need a burr grinder for espresso?

Yes. Blade grinders chop beans unevenly, and espresso needs a fine, even grind that you can adjust in small steps. Every grinder in this guide uses burrs.

How many grind settings do I need for espresso?

More is not always better, because makers spread different ranges across their dials. What matters is how many steps fall in the espresso range. The Baratza Encore ESP gives espresso 20 of its 40 steps; stepless grinders such as the DF54 and Mignon let you set any point.

What is grind retention?

The grounds left inside the grinder after each use, which end up in your next dose. Single-dose grinders are designed to keep it low: Di Pacci quotes under 0.1 g for the Turin DF54. Most hopper grinders do not publish a figure.
